for ONLY SLEEPING ONLY SLEEPING Cam looked around, looked down the deserted street, at the snow falling steadily and glinting in the glow of the streetlamps. He stamped his feet, trying to get warm, trying to get some feeling back in his toes. His boots were getting old, and the water had started to leak into them a few weeks ago, just in time for the really cold weather. Still, he guessed he’d rather be out here on his own than in his uncle’s old trailer, or in a motel room with his mother, especially when she had some guy with her, or she was drunk and screaming at him and telling him how fucking worthless he was and how she wished she’d never had a kid. At least here something good might happen to him. Somebody might take him home and feed him, might let him stay for awhile or something like the guy who’d wanted to take pictures of him had done, might give him more money than he’d asked for. You never knew. Sometimes people could be nice. Sometimes good things happened. Sometimes the world was an okay place to be living in. But not often. It was so fucking cold. Cam lit a cigarette, not liking to take his hands out of the pockets of his jacket but feeling like he needed a smoke. His teeth were chattering, which made it kind of hard to light the cigarette, but somehow it always made him feel better, if not exactly warmer, to inhale that gray, cloudy stuff, to cough a little bit sometimes, to feel that he was at least alive enough for that. Cam closed his eyes, bounced on his heels for awhile, flicked the ash off his cigarette. Maybe, he thought absently, when he opened his eyes there’d be a car there – some closet-case after a blow-job, some old perv with a thing for boys, some guy who’d be embarrassed enough or nice enough to feel sorry for him and get him a room for the night.
